How do you respond when you have a complete failure or when you face a big setback that takes you back to step 1?
Do you flip out, get frustrated and
Do you get angry, leave it and then come back to start again later?
Do you give up?
Do you become curious, examine and ask questions?
Do you ignore it?
Elon Musk is one person who if you take the time to study, can impart massive amounts of wisdom when it comes to facing setbacks.
If you take SpaceX,
Rocket after rocket has exploded
Every one of these setbacks has been treated as an opportunity to learn something new.
That’s why, with every explosion, the next rocket is more refined.
You see, within the setbacks, lies the solutions to getting the rocket closer to its designed purpose.
These setbacks are necessary feedback for progress.
This is how Elon continues to move the needle towards his big vision of getting the human race to Mars.
This is how progress works.
But
Progress only works this way if you expect and examine the setback.
A lot of people face a setback, treat it like it shouldn’t have happened, and restart and redo it all over again.
They don’t examine it with curiosity
They just restart in the same way they went about it before
As Einstein said,
“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result”.
So when we take the time to examine the setback and then get back on the launch pad with newfound knowledge, mindset, resources and adapted strategy, we come to the truth that what we are launching isn’t the same.
We are starting over. We may be on the same launch pad, but we are in a different rocket this time.
Remember:
Setback Equals Progress if you examine it with curiosity.
Setback Equals Stagnation if left unexamined.

- What lead to this being triggered? Why? Why? Why? Why?
- What do we need to change in order to ensure we do not run into this again?
- If we change this, will it have a flow effect on something else that may cause another issue? If so how do we mitigate that?
