Have you ever heard of the personal growth trap?
No, not many have…
A friend of mine reached out this week…
Who has been trapped in an invisible cage for over 12 months.
And they are super resistant to doing any work outside of their preferred style of coaching…
This is what I explained to her.
A little truth that most Coaches, Healers and Development gurus don’t want you to know…
The Personal Growth Trap
When you put a certain type of healing or personal growth method above all others, you cut yourself off from the opportunity that lives in every moment for growth,
to face your shadow and to evolve in influence and awareness.
In doing so, you trap yourself in a methodology, you become dogmatic,
which in turn becomes problematic and limits your own ability to be curious and open.
Caging you in an unseen limited mindset while you ignorantly believe you have a growth mindset.
I know a psychologist who got bariatric surgery.
She put her training and psychology master on a pedestal.
She would not even entertain the possibility that a mindset coach who worked in the overeating space could help her.
Because if her ”Psychology Master” couldn’t help her, then how could they possibly?
I even created this same trap for myself.
But in reverse…
I stopped meditating because I found a process that was unlike anything I had done before. Even the educator said, “You don’t need to meditate if you just do this once each week“.
I was so enamoured with this process that I stopped some of my old routines and habits that had been super powerful for me up to this time.
In the end, I got sideswiped hard when I ran into the drawbacks of both not continuing my routine and this process. In the end, I went back to what was working and just added this in when needed.
In truth… I’ve been trapped in many personal growth and development paradigms.
I have been infatuated with methods only to be met by their limits, breaking my infatuation with them and grounding me back into their truth.
I have looked down on methods only to have them come into my life and radically shift me or open me up to profound insight.
What I came to realise is there are many tools for many purposes…
Just as a hammer is not the right tool for taking off wheels,
One personal growth strategy or tool is not perfect for all types of growth and transformation…
And from these “Personal Growth Traps”, I have been able to refine
My Top 20% of the 20%…
These are my TOP 8 GO-TOs for personal growth
- The Demartini Method
- Getting Clear on your voids, values and vision and prioritising your life to expand them
- Set aligned uncomfortable goals, prioritise your actions, then act on priority
- Speak Radical Truth with yourself and others (most underrated, but ridiculously powerful)
- Value Linking
- Breath Work and Cold Exposure
- Meditation and Visualisation
If you were to apply just one of these you would discover a profound shift in your psychology, physiology and then the way you show up in life.
Apply all of them…
And I will leave that up to you to imagine.
Hope you enjoyed this week’s wisdom.
Until next week,
Keep smashing your growth ceilings,
