The one shift to exponentially shift results

Coming into the new year, I wanted to give you one big idea on how to stay committed to your goals by overcoming overwhelm and never feeling like you’re failing again.

You see, like most people, I would commit to multiple goals, plan them out, and expect myself to achieve them all within a year. I would set goals in finance, business, health, family, and my intimate relationship.

Like a kid who just walked into a candy store with big eyes and an empty tummy, I would overestimate what I could fit in, forget about the fact that what I wanted to eat would have many unseen problems and challenges and fill my bag to the brim with no room to move.

The problem with this was:

  • I had multiple commitments that often led to being stressed out, feeling under pressure, and then getting overwhelmed when problems arose that I hadn’t thought of, especially when they all decided to hit together!
  • It compounded the feeling of failure. As soon as one goal became complex and required more attention and time, it caused me to let all the others slip. Meaning one problem was like removing one card from a tower of cards. It all fell over.
  • I often didn’t achieve any of them because my attention and focus became scattered as the goals became more complex. Like a laser that can cut concrete when focused, it loses its power when spread thin across a bigger area; focus and attention are the same.

It’s crazy that I actually ran into the exact things that my goal-setting was meant to help me avoid.

My goals were meant to guarantee me progress, a sense of achievement and growth in my self-belief and self-worth. Often I tussled with the inner turmoil that felt like I was getting none of these…

This is what made me realise that maybe I was taught something that didn’t work for me, what I was taught might have worked for others but wasn’t fitting for me, or maybe it didn’t work for anyone and it was just parroted and forced upon people.

Then this is what I realised….

My one big idea.

One Commitment

Instead of having multiple goals, you have one.

That your calendar schedule is your ONLY goal.

And the ONLY commitment you have is to follow through on what is on your calendar.

Thats it.

If you follow through on your calendar commitments, you make progress across all your goals in the time you have allocated for them.

This means that the only variable related to your goal that you need to change based on progress is your calendar. Add time, remove time and keep the same time installed based on progression.

This is also then aligning your psychology with the law of the one and the many. The one goal, with the many components, rather than the many goals, with the many components.
